SAY NO!

The Joint Commission for the Preservation of Lake Ontario

The Joint Commission for the Preservation of Lake Ontario was initiated by Ken Blankebush, Chairman of the Jefferson County Legislature. Mr Blankenbush appointed Legislator Barry Ormsby to head the Commission for Jefferson County. Oswego County Legislator Shawn Doyle is co-chair of the Joint Commission. Both counties have passed resolutions opposing the off-shore wind turbines.

There are eight members of the Joint Commission: Barry Ormsby, Shawn Doyle, Mr Paul Warneck , Jim McGowan, Alex James, Dawn Holinski, John Byrne and Karl Williams.

The mission of the Joint Commission is to organize the towns at the Eastern End, and the Southern Shore of Lake Ontario, to oppose the New York Power Authority (NYPA) plan to place upwards of 1,000 wind turbines in the lake.

The turbines will be placed in waters of less than 150' in depth, and constitute a blockade running from Oswego to Tibbets Point. There will be a sizeable "no go" zone around each turbine. Commercial as well as recreational use will be significantly restricted. The waters between 50'-150' in depth constitute the most productive fishing grounds on the lake.

The Joint Commission has secured almost unanimous opposition by the Towns along the lake. The County Legislatures of both Oswego & Jefferson Counties back the Joint Commission. Mr Kessler, head of NYPA, has repeatedly stated that if we do not want them he will not pursue the issue in those areas opposed.

Mr. Kessler will be addressing the jefferson County Legislature on 3/9/2010. It is anticipated that he will "offer a deal we cannot resist", jobs for the unions, electricity and possibly payments to localities. The Jefferson County Legislature anticipates his offer of a sweet deal, they will politely listen to his statements and anticipate that he will again say "if you don't want them you won't get them". It is the belief of the Joint Commission for the Preservation of Lake Ontario, an organization created by this legislature, that Mr. Kessler will then be advised by Mr. Blankenbush, that we accept his offer of not placing them in our waters. Should NYPA/Kessler renege on his past promises, then the fight will turn to Albany and higher..
